What Do Polarized Sunglasses Offer Me?

polarized sunglasses offer glare lenses sun

Polarized sunglasses have lenses which give you a clearer view that cuts glare.  They let you see things which had previously been hidden by the sun's glare into your eyes.

What polarized lenses do is cut out most horizontally-polarized light is so bright that normally blocks out much of the finer detail your eye should be seeing.

Examples of this strongly-polarized glare is in the light reflected from large plate-glass windows on large office buildings, light reflected off the top of water and waves, and sometimes strong light reflected off snow.

Polarized sunglasses have the ability to cut through all this light clutter like a hot knife through butter. The lenses can do this by blocking most light waves that vibrate on a horizontal plane, while letting through light that vibrates on a vertical plane.

This doesn't cut all of the glare, but it gets rid of the worst of it. And sun glasses that aren't polarized can't do this. They chop out light whether it's vertical (wanted) light or horizontal (unwanted) reflections.

Ordinary shades just gives you a much darker view with no detail in the shadows... and that's hardly helpful if the things to're interested in were in those shadowed areas.

This is why polarized sunglasses have become so popular with sports fishermen, snow skiers, water skiers and just about everybody who works or plays in places with lots of glare from the sun.
